Here's Why Stand-Up Pouches Are An Emerging Packaging Trend

When it comes to displaying your CPG product, stand-up pouches are revolutionary. Here is what you need to know about this type of packaging and how it is being used in the CPG industry.

Stand-Up Pouches in CPG Packaging

One of the latest CPG packaging trends is the stand-up pouch. As a package, the stand-up pouch is nothing new—it’s just that consumers have grown fond of them. That’s because customers are increasingly concerned about packaging waste and the environmental impact of all the plastic found in CPG packaging.

Stand-up pouches are usually resealable or have a spout and can hold liquids or solids. Capri Sun snack pouches have used this type of CPG packaging for years. Baby food and granola brands also use these as their go-to preferred packaging option. These packages are efficient, flexible, and tough, and they line today’s grocery and retail shelves.

The latest reports show stand-up pouches are the hot product category for CPG packaging, with a CAGR of 6% to $2.9 billion in the next two years. Consumers find the aesthetics of these packages appealing, plus they’re easy to store and cart around, with handles, spouts, and resealable zippers standard. They have a lighter weight, making them less costly to ship over rigid packaging. Packaging Strategies says there are seven essential benefits to the stand-up pouch design, including:

  • Their ability to reseal makes them an ideal choice for snack foods or even vegetables, to keep them fresher longer. They’re also easy to close, a benefit for people with mobility issues or arthritis.
  • Designs with clear windows offer transparency into what you’re buying, something that is particularly appealing to today’s fickle consumer markets. Instead of just reading the label, the transparent window gives you a simple glance at the product inside.
  • These packages are recyclable and can be made with sustainable materials. This is a positive point that will appeal to almost any consumer group today.
  • They take fewer materials to produce, which reduces waste. But because the packages are lighter, they also cut transportation costs. These benefits reduce the carbon footprint of the product and the brand.
  • The addition of spouts offered the CPG packaging designers the option to use these products for sauces, juice, soup, or other liquids.
  • The durability of the stand-up pouch cannot be discounted; despite the packaging flexibility, these are hardy little pouches even if they’re half full. They stand upright on the shelf and hold their own against bigger, heavier products.
  • We mentioned handles as a benefit. Consumers like the idea of carrying these products without wasting a bag, adding to their eco-friendly appeal.

In addition to all of these perks, consumer behavior is shifting toward snacking throughout the day instead of three main meals. This lends itself to the stand-up pouch, which can be resealed after repeated noshing’s with no loss in food quality.
