What Are Some Options for Reusable Packaging?

Reading a food label.

There is a high demand for sustainable CPG packaging. Consumers are basing buying decisions on which materials are used.

Brands are now looking to reusable packaging as an option because of its durability and ease of use. Materials that can be used multiple times work well for product transportation and may be suitable for other applications such as with CPG products. Here are some options to consider.

Consumers Care About Sustainable Packaging

Today’s consumers are more environmentally-conscious than ever before. They care about sustainable packaging and support recycling on every level.

This shows in their purchasing decisions. They seek out companies who not only sell sustainable products but who also extend these options to their CPG packaging.

Reusable packaging is a popular eco-friendly trend. It is becoming more important to consumers who want to make sure their garbage is being recycled. As reported by the World Economic Forum, only 14% of the world’s plastic packaging gets recycled.

Consumers want solutions that will work long into the future. This is where reusable packaging comes into play.

A new plan is needed to achieve a truly circular economy where resources are shared, refurbished, recycled, and reused. One way to do this is by replacing disposable packaging materials with those that can be used over and over again.

These types of containers are typically made of glass, strong plastic, or metal. They can be refilled multiple times by a company, in a store, or even by consumers in their own homes.

These materials are very durable and able to withstand continual use. This will drastically reduce waste by eliminating the need to continuously recycle containers.

Options for Reusable Packaging

CPG brands are embracing reusable packaging. Fully recyclable or reusable materials are being incorporated into planning strategies. These include:

  • Engineered plastics
  • Alloys
  • Glass

Research shows containers and other packaging materials are responsible for 30% of all waste. What isn’t recycled winds up incinerated or dumped in landfills. This makes reusable packaging an even more relevant trend.

One area where reusable packaging is becoming very popular is in the transportation of products. For example, corrugated plastic bins, tanks, and pallets protect products so they may be transported safely.

Future trends related to reusable packaging might include smart packaging to communicate important information to customers such as food temperature or shelf life. Personalized packaging that is customized for consumers may also become a part of reusable packaging.

The combination of reusable, smart, and personalized packaging will continue evolving with a focus on improving the customer experience. Implementing sustainable packaging strategies that encourage customers to reuse packaging materials will increase brand loyalty and business growth.

Other examples of reusable packaging are:

  • Totes
  • Handheld containers
  • Reusable plastic containers
  • Trays

These containers safely move products through the supply chain and into the hands of consumers. These customers can reuse containers such as glass jars and plastic boxes to store products or even other items.

Reusable packaging takes the focus away from single-use packaging. This trend will prompt consumers to consider the positive effects it has on the environment and think about even more ways to reduce waste.
